Buckeyes 2-0 After Home Opener

Notre Dame College – The Buckeyes kicked off the dual meet season last Sunday in St. John Arena against NAIA power Notre Dame College. Notre Dame has a very talented line up that consists of several Division I caliber athletes. One of the anticipated matches was NAIA National champion and 2 time Division I qualifier Victor Crenshaw against Ohio State workhorse Colt Sponseller. The week prior to the match rumors circulated about excessive talk stemming from Notre Dame corner about the outcome of this anticipated bout between Crenshaw and Sponseller. Once the match began talk ceased and it was all action. Sponseller started strong and ended even stronger throwing up 22 points on the former Division I NCAA qualifier. Two other interesting match ups occurred. J Jaggers wrestled former high school teammate Adam Koballa and Jason Johnstone also wrestled his high school teammate Thomas Straughn. Overall all the Buckeyes looked solid giving up only 6 team points, which was due to a forfeit at 149 pounds.

Cleveland State – The second match of the afternoon ended with a 35-13 team score in favor of the Buckeyes. This past weekend 7 starters stepped on the mat and three were out for the duals, but plan to be back by Vegas. Jared Kusar was ready to wrestle, if needed, at 149 pounds while Wes Bergman (184) has been wrestling tremendous this season winning both of his dual matches. Fifth year senior Jason Cook (197) bumped up to heavyweight this weekend where he fought hard and represented the Buckeyes with a 1-1 record. Russ Hellickson Award

Last year Ohio State honored a tremendous coach and leader Russ Hellickson by creating an award for each home dual meet. The Russ Hellickson Award will be given to an Ohio State student-athlete with the most outstanding dual meet performance. This past weekend two awards were handed out. Congratulations to Colt Sponseller and Jason Johnstone.

Notre Dame College – Colt Sponseller had an outstanding performance with his 22 -7 technical fall over NAIA National Champion Victor Crenshaw. Colt has a relentless pace and is a very disciplined and focused wrestler. The hype surrounding the match inspired Colt to make a statement and his performance had Buckeye fans on their feet.

Cleveland State – Jason Johnstone continues his undefeated season and earned the Hellickson Award with an impressive performance. Jason amassed 26 points en route to a 26-10 technical fall.
