Here’s the 2008 Ohio State - Michigan Report Card:
The Opponent - D. I probably started watching Ohio State - Michigan games in the mid-70’s. I don’t know the exact number, but I’m guessing that I’ve seen more than thirty games so far. And in all those games, I’ve never seen such a poorly prepared Michigan team. I know Lloyd Carr didn’t turn over an elite program to his successor, but neither did he leave the mess we saw on Saturday. The Michigan kids played hard. They still had pride. But they were completely outcoached and outclassed. If it were my decision to make, I probably wouldn’t have picked Rich Rodriguez to lead a storied and legendary program. But he’s there now. I’m sure he’ll eventually be able to recruit his kind of players and reach a level of respectability. The question is whether the people who love Michigan football will give him enough time.
The Defense - A-. With the exception of one drive, the Buckeye defense completely dominated a dysfunctional and outmanned Wolverine offense. At all three levels, the Buckeyes played superior football. The D-line was able to get pressure with only three down lineman. The linebackers cleaned up the running game. And the secondary shut down an underwhelming passing attack. James Laurinaitus stole the show, not just because of his 12 tackles, but also because of his leadership and emotion. Not a bad way to end a wonderful college career for him personally. And not a bad way to end the regular season for a defense that gradually matured into a fine unit. A Buckeye Legends tip of the hat has to go out to Coach Jim Heacock who, despite taking a little heat this year from many fans and so-called pundits, including this blog, found a way to grind out a championship season. This might not be the best Buckeye defense in recent memory, but because of the progress they made after the USC game, it might be the one that the coaches remember with the most satisfaction.
The Offense - B+. Pryor looked a little shaky to start the game, but he eventually found a rhythm. The real story, though, was the Big Play, including long runs by Beanie Wells and Boom Herron as well as the deep balls to Brian Hartline and Brian Robiskie. And in the last regular season game, the offensive line finally lived up to pre-season expectations. They moved the line of scrimmage throughout the game and provided pretty good protection for the passing game. As we’ll probably see a good SEC or Big 12 team in the Bowl Game, the Buckeye O-line needed a great performance as a confidence builder. They’ll determine whether we can finally exorcise our post-season demons. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Todd Boeckman’s performance. After enduring defeat and humiliation this season, he found a measure of redemption in his final regular season game. I’m still not sure why we didn’t see more of him this year, particularly in the Penn State game, but against the Wolverines he reminded everyone that he has still has the talent and poise to run a productive offense. I have no doubt that he’ll be successful at the next level.
The Special Teams - A-. With Ray Small back on the field and the punt and kick coverage teams smothering the Wolverines return game, the special teams delivered another superior performance on Saturday. They set the tone for the game with a very physical effort.
My Favorite Play. Almost too many to choose from this week. I think I’ll go with Boeckman’s long ball to Robiskie in the 4th quarter. The game was over by then, but it really showed how to execute the deep passing game. The trajectory and spin of the ball just seem different when it’s thrown by a pure passer.

Buckeyes 2-0 After Home Opener
Notre Dame College – The Buckeyes kicked off the dual meet season last Sunday in St. John Arena against NAIA power Notre Dame College. Notre Dame has a very talented line up that consists of several Division I caliber athletes. One of the anticipated matches was NAIA National champion and 2 time Division I qualifier Victor Crenshaw against Ohio State workhorse Colt Sponseller. The week prior to the match rumors circulated about excessive talk stemming from Notre Dame corner about the outcome of this anticipated bout between Crenshaw and Sponseller. Once the match began talk ceased and it was all action. Sponseller started strong and ended even stronger throwing up 22 points on the former Division I NCAA qualifier. Two other interesting match ups occurred. J Jaggers wrestled former high school teammate Adam Koballa and Jason Johnstone also wrestled his high school teammate Thomas Straughn. Overall all the Buckeyes looked solid giving up only 6 team points, which was due to a forfeit at 149 pounds.
Cleveland State – The second match of the afternoon ended with a 35-13 team score in favor of the Buckeyes. This past weekend 7 starters stepped on the mat and three were out for the duals, but plan to be back by Vegas. Jared Kusar was ready to wrestle, if needed, at 149 pounds while Wes Bergman (184) has been wrestling tremendous this season winning both of his dual matches. Fifth year senior Jason Cook (197) bumped up to heavyweight this weekend where he fought hard and represented the Buckeyes with a 1-1 record. For more information about both dual meets please CLICK HERE.
Russ Hellickson Award
Last year Ohio State honored a tremendous coach and leader Russ Hellickson by creating an award for each home dual meet. The Russ Hellickson Award will be given to an Ohio State student-athlete with the most outstanding dual meet performance. This past weekend two awards were handed out. Congratulations to Colt Sponseller and Jason Johnstone.
Notre Dame College – Colt Sponseller had an outstanding performance with his 22 -7 technical fall over NAIA National Champion Victor Crenshaw. Colt has a relentless pace and is a very disciplined and focused wrestler. The hype surrounding the match inspired Colt to make a statement and his performance had Buckeye fans on their feet.
Cleveland State – Jason Johnstone continues his undefeated season and earned the Hellickson Award with an impressive performance. Jason amassed 26 points en route to a 26-10 technical fall.

It would be easy for an Ohio State fan to take a look at this
Saturday’s annual rivalry game against Michigan and presume it will end
in a Buckeye blowout.
There is a chance that happens. The Wolverines are in the middle of one
of their most challenging seasons in the program’s history. A change of
coaches, playing scheme, and the graduation of many long-time starters
has left our rivals with a 3-8 record.
With this in mind, it would be easy to take this game lightly. I caution you not to do so.
One thing I’ve learned in my years of playing and watching this game is
that when Ohio State and Michigan play, each team brings its best
effort to the field. Time and time again I’ve watched the favored team
lose because the underdog played its best game of the season.
I have no doubt whatsoever that Michigan is going to have its best game
of the season Saturday. I’m sure of it. Although they’ve had struggles
this year, this is still a team that possesses some nice talent. I
expect that talent to be on display against us on Saturday.
This will also be coach Rich Rodriquez’s first time participating in
this game. Coach Rodriquez is well known for being an innovative and
imaginative offensive coach, so I expect him to have a few tricks up
his sleeve against us. Defensively, Michigan has plenty of players back
from last year’s group that did a good job of slowing our offense in
Ann Arbor.
So while some may be looking at this game and thinking it doesn’t have
quite the cache as usual, I’d offer this: When Michigan and Ohio State
play, records matter little. This game will be a battle. You can bet on
it.
BOWL TOUR
One thing I did want to note is that once our game with Michigan ends
our plans for the Buckeye bowl game will start almost immediately. Our
staff will be hard at work over the next month getting our tour, Bowl
Bash, and other items ready for alumni.
If we beat Michigan and Michigan State beats Penn State, we will have
honed in on a shot at the Rose Bowl. In the event that we earn a Rose
Bowl bid on Saturday, we will start the pre-sale of our tour
immediately.
I’d encourage you to check our Bowl Tour headquarters Web site here: TOURS. Following this page will give you everything you need to know about how to join us for our always popular bowl tour.
Just in time for the Michigan game, I did a written interview with the Ohio State Alumni Association.
I opine on, among other things, the Michigan rivalry, their fight song and the current Wolverine coach. I also give my prediction for the game on Saturday.
By the way, if you haven’t heard yet, the reports are in and it’s been confirmed that Archie’s quietly doing a fantastic job at the OSUAA.
The below information was sent to me via email and was originally written by Jack Park and published at BuckeyeExtra.com. I thought is was worthy of reposting…. ENJOY!
Rich Rodriguez hopes to avoid becoming an anomaly: a Michigan football coach who loses his first game against Ohio State.
The 105th chapter of college football’s greatest rivalry will be written Saturday afternoon when Ohio State entertains Michigan with a noon kickoff in Ohio Stadium. The Wolverines lead the all-time series 57-41-6, but the past 80 games (1928 through 2007) are even at 38-38-4.
Michigan’s 16 more victories than Ohio State are primarily the result of the Wolverines’ record of 13-0-2 during the first 15 games (played from 1897 to 1918). Halfback Chic Harley led OSU to its long-awaited initial win, on Oct. 25, 1919 — 13-3 in Ann Arbor.
Ohio State has won the past four games. With a victory Saturday, OSU’s five-game winning streak would be its longest over the Wolverines. Prior to the present winning streak, the Buckeyes twice won four straight — 1934-1937 under coach Francis Schmidt and 1960-1963 under coach Woody Hayes. Michigan’s longest winning streak over Ohio State is nine straight from 1901-1909. The Wolverines also won six in a row from 1922 to 1927.
Coach Rich Rodriguez is in his first season at Michigan. The Wolverines have had 12 different head coaches, from 1897 through 2007, who guided their teams during the 104 previous games against the Buckeyes. Only one of those 12 lost to Ohio State during his first season as Michigan’s head coach — coach Harry Kipke’s first UM team lost to OSU 7-0 in 1929.
Jim Tressel is the fifth head coach to lead Ohio State in eight or more games against the Wolverines. The other four are Dr. John Wilce (11 games), Woody Hayes (28 games), Earle Bruce (nine games) and John Cooper (13 games). With a win Saturday, Tressel’s record against Michigan would be 7-1. The Ohio State coach with the second-best mark over his first eight games would be Woody Hayes at 5-3 from 1951-1958.
Ohio State and Michigan have faced each other each year since 1918. The Game was moved to the last game of the regular season for both teams in 1935. Only once has a game been decided by a single point. Michigan won 17-16 at Ohio Stadium in 1926 to hand the Buckeyes their only setback that season.
Five times Ohio State has entered the game ranked as the country’s No.1 team, while Michigan has been top-ranked three times. The Buckeyes are 3-1-1 when ranked No.1 — winning in 1954 (21-7), 1975 (21-14) and 2006 (42-39); losing in 1969 (24-12); and playing to a 10-10 tie in 1973. The Wolverines are 3-0 as the nation’s No.1, being victorious in 1947 (21-0), 1948 (13-3) and 1997 (20-14).
Both schools have all-time winning percentages higher than .700. Only once during the 105 seasons Ohio State and Michigan have met have both teams ended the season with losing records. The Wolverines finished 4-5 and the Buckeyes 3-5-1 in 1959.
Saturday’s date is Nov. 22. Hayes and UM’s Bo Schembechler each coached their first victories in the series on Nov. 22 — Hayes (27-7) on 11-22-52; Schembechler (24-12) on 11-22-69. The series’ 100th game was also played on this date — UM won 35-21 in Michigan Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003.
In addition to winning the past four, Ohio State has won six of the past seven and seven of the past 10, but only nine of the past 23 (9-13-1) and 13 of the past 32 (13-18-1). This year’s encounter will be in Columbus, but the home field in this series has been only a slight advantage (52-46-6).

Katie sent an email to several ex-players asking whether we had any fond memories of the Ohio State - Michigan rivalry we’d be willing to share.
A few years ago I wrote a chapter for a book called Game of My Life in which I recount my performance in the 1984 Michigan game. I posted the chapter on the Buckeye Legends blog last year, but I thought it was worth mentioning again during Michigan week.
