I had to yawn Friday when I saw the news that Jim Tressel’s annual salary was bumped to $3.5 million.
When I finished yawning, I thought, “What too them so long?”
I had figured once the Forbes report was published two weeks ago, labeling Tressel as the “most underpaid” coach in America, it was just a matter of time before the movers and shakers at Ohio State would make him at least the highest paid coach in the Big Ten.
After all, Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, a coach with a 19-18 record over the past three seasons, inexplicably has held that title for long enough.
And now Tressel is — deservedly so.
I am happy for Coach Tressel, who is the type of guy who has not made any gripes about his previous paycheck when he surely could have. In fact, he is one of the most philanthropic coaches in the country, consistently giving back peripheral income to good causes.
But after all, how much money does a guy need when his happiness is all that counts?
He’s got his John Deere tractor, a nice big house in Upper Arlington, a great family and a ton of respect and admiration of all Ohioans.
So as the 2008 season kicks off, all seems to be falling in place for Buckeye fans.
We have had the Best Damn Band in the Land for decades. We are hoping to have the Best Damn Team in the Land for 2008. And now we have the Best Paid Coach in the Big Ten.
Get this fact: Tressel now makes approximately $25,000 more in one week than Woody
Hayes earned in his final year of 1978 as head coach at Ohio State.
Oh well, that’s just a sign of the times.
And during Woody’s final year, a hot dog at Ohio Stadium cost 50 cents and a gallon of gas went for around 61 cents.
Ah, the good ol’ days….
Let me take that last line back … we weren’t beating Michigan much back then.

As of Saturday, it will be 235 days since the Ohio State Buckeyes walked out of the Superdome, again losers of the BCS Championship Game.
Since, we have endured the critics and learned many things:
• Two consecutive losses in the BCS Championship Game has had no negative effect on recruiting. The Buckeyes continue to stockpile talent.
• All but one (Vernon Gholston) of the best senior-to-be Buckeyes chose to remain collegians to chase the ultimate team accomplishment — a national title. People like cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and linebacker James Laurinaitis are still wearing the scarlet and gray.
• The Buckeyes, although ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the two major polls heading into the new season, undeniably have become the most-hated, most-mocked college football program by fans of other top-25 schools. (Just compare them to the Oklahoma Sooners, who have not even made the BCS title game but have lost consecutive BCS bowls as well — first to Boise State and then by 20 points to West Virginia. And yet, there is absolutely no vitriol or disdain directed their way.)
• Buckeye fans may be seeing the most-talented, most-motivated team in the 118-year history of Ohio State football. Skilled talent and deep, deep experience permeates almost every position.
That being said, I see the key to the 2008 season — and let’s face it, it is BCS-title-or-bust no matter what anyone says — lies with the OFFENSIVE LINE.
This is the one unit that has performed terribly in the past two title games, out-performed by quick defenses.
The Buckeyes’ offensive line has had few problems blocking the fronts of the Youngstown States, Northwesterns and even Michigans.
It is how well this line performs Sept. 13 against USC, Oct. 4 at Wisconsin and Jan. 8 in Miami (should the Buckeyes reach South Florida) which will determine whether 2008 becomes the special season all Buckeyes are anticipating.

For the second year the Buckeyes will take on Jim Tressel’s former team the Penguins of Youngstown State. Last year the Bucks started out slow and then came on strong to earn a 38-7 victory. Even though Ohio State has some respect for the Penguins, the truth is that this is little more than a warm up for USC. I wonder how much of a warm up it will really be. I expect to see a lot of players get some playing time, especially some of the highly touted freshman, but I still have trouble with the scheduling of a Division 1-AA team. No disrespect to the YSU Alumni, but since this game doesn’t count for any Bowl consideration; the Bucks need to lay the wood to the Penguins from start to finish.
The Penguins come into this game with only one appearance in the playoffs since Tress left and are picked 3rd in their league. I’ve heard comparisons to Appalachian St. v UM, but App St. won their Nat’l Championship a few years in a row. YSU comes into the game with some good Ohio “football players” but they have big holes at QB and running back and really only have four experienced players on the defensive side of the ball. Expect them to throw some wrinkles into the game early with Ferlando Williams taking direct snaps and running behind the experienced but undersized line. Don’t expect too much throwing from the first year QB but they will have to put the ball in the air or “the animal” and friends will stuff the line of scrimmage.
I expect to see a lot of running from the Bucks. They are going to establish the ground game with some controlled passing game with the hopes of rolling down the field and racking up some early points. Tress will rotate a lot of the ones and twos and once he gets the comfortable lead, he’ll take the foot off of the pedal and we will see some of the young blood. Look for Boeckman to be consistent with no mistakes and Joe Bauserman to be tested a little when he gets in there, with Pryor coming in to everyone’s anticipation.
Back in the old days, the Bucks would take a mid-level WAC team and run up 60 points on them, but I would expect to see the Bucks play a lot of people and maybe stay around 40 points with holding the Penguins to maybe a touch with a kick. The goals: ball control, solid running game, no sacks, no turnovers, third down conversions and scoring TD’s in the red zone.
GO BUCKS!

All eyes are on Terrell Pryor going into the 2008 season. Well he is definitely a highly touted recruit and a very talented young man but it is a big step on to the collegiate stage especially at a place like Ohio State. He has been doing well in practice although he is running in the third spot behind Boeckman and Bauserman. What it is really going to come down to is: Can he run the offense efficiently and distribute the football to the other play makers? Can he make the right pre-snap reads and get the O in the right play? Can he avoid making the costly turnovers at the wrong times? Does he have the mental toughness to make it through a long and physical season with the academic load thrown in? These are some tough questions and the results remain to be seen.
I think the advantage to all of the attention to Pryor is going to be a benefit to Todd Boeckman. Although he is the starter and had a pretty good campaign last year, he is really under the radar and that could be a big help for a low keyed guy like Todd. He is the leader on the offense. He has a lot of big play makers around him and a veteran offensive line with some talented freshman thrown in. He has running backs that can carry a big load and get the D on their heels and he has a bevy of receivers that can make him look real good.
Even though Terrell has all the talent in the world, I think the Buckeyes are going to get back to run a little more this year. Beanie has proven that he can carry the load and he is healthy plus he should get some good relief from Saine and Maurice. I like the fact that the coaches have been spending a lot of time in finding a quality fullback or two to get out in front and clear the road. This doesn’t mean that Tress will abandon his offensive attack but I think he sees an opportunity to control the ball a little more and keep the D off the field more this season. Remember, at YSU Tress had the philosophy to change his offense to fit his talent and won Championships with different offensive schemes.
The big fix this year needs to be special teams. The coverage last year was terrible and the kicking game was below what we are used to around here. Look for the coaches to put better athletes on the field in kick coverage and focus on pinning teams deep for the D to get a 3 and out.
You can talk about all the talent in the world and how they are going to use Pryor but winning games in the Big Ten always comes down to the fundamentals: field position, time of possession and turnovers.

So here we go again — the Buckeyes enter another football season with expectations higher than the very top row of C Deck.
As an alumnus and proud fan, anything less than a Big Ten title, another crushing of Michigan and a national title for a team that returns 20 starters from last season’s BCS Championship runner-up team will be a disappointment to me.
There-in lies the rub.
As Buckeyes, you can say that our expectations have peaked.
Meanwhile, the nation has turned against us.
The critics are calling us the Buffalo Bills of college football.
Remember when the Bills lost four consecutive Super Bowls, they were regarded as the lovable, never-give-up team for whom everyone wanted a break-through championship?
What is vastly different is that unlike the Bills back then, the Buckeyes attract haters like no other program in the country.
I feel it everywhere I go. I read it almost every day on the internet. If you are not a Buckeye, you are not just indifferent about Ohio State. You hate Ohio State. Just ask Carson Palmer, who lives in Ohio and pays state taxes.
In fact, a recent ESPN poll and accompany column made it official by calling Ohio State the most-hated program in the country.
Now we know how Notre Dame felt for all those decades. Except we still have a top-notch football team to go with our pride and fandom.
I guess we should take it all as a compliment.
Anyway, if we should get to the title game again, this time in Miami on January 8, and lose it, the avalanche of scorn and revulsion will grow like moss on the north side of an oak tree.
On the other hand, if Ohio State should win the 2008 national title, the critics will crawl into a hole for another year and probably hate us even more.
Which brings me to the pre-season polls. Does anyone have any doubt whatsoever that if the Buckeyes had won either the 2006 or ‘07 national title, that they would enter this season as the unanimous No. 1 team?
They clearly are being penalized for past failures by opening as No. 2 in the AP poll and at No. 3 in the coaches’ poll.
Of course, it will work itself out, beginning Sept. 13 in the L.A. Coliseum.
Here are a few other opinions and ramblings:
Some other opinions regarding the first Top 25 poll:
* The underrated: No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 24 Alabama, unranked Utah and unranked Florida State.
* The overrated: No. 1 Georgia, No. 7 LSU, No. 9 Clemson, No. 20 Illinois, and No. 25 Pittsburgh.
* I am not just saying this as an Ohio State fan, etc., but I really expect Michigan to struggle to win games. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wolverines fall to an 4-8 debacle. They will start a quarterback with no experience and an offensive line decimated by departures. Where will the yards — and the points — come from? I expect Utah to beat the Wolverines in Ann Arbor to start the long, long season for the Maize and (really, really) Blue.
* As for Ohio State, I expect the Oct. 4 game at Wisconsin to be as difficult as any game on the schedule, perhaps even more difficult than the USC game.
