Six Former Buckeye Golfers advance to sectional qualifying of U.S. Open

Six former Ohio State men’s golfers have advanced to sectional qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Open, held this year June 12-15 at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif. The six golfers moved on to sectional qualifying June 2 in Columbus at either Ohio State’s Scarlet Course or Double Eagle Golf Club.

Kevin Hall, the Big Ten individual champion in 2004, earned medalist honors by firing a 5-under 67 at the Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati. Just behind Hall in second place was former teammate and 2005 graduate Scott Anderson. The former All-Big Ten golfer was one stroke back with a score of 68.

Mike Austin, a 2001 grad, played his qualifying round at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, Mich. He shot a 70, one shot off the pace, to finish second and move on to sectional qualifying.

Stephen Gangluff advanced to sectional qualifying with a round of 73 on the Creek Course at the Hammock Dunes Club in Palm Coast, Fla.

Chris Smith, former All-America selection and uncle of current Buckeye Brad Smith, shot a 71 at the Dye Preserve Club in Jupiter, Fla.

Ryan Armour, a 1999 graduate and former All-American, also will be competing in sectional qualifying. Because of his PGA TOUR status, he did not have to go through the round of local qualifying.
