Former Men’s Hockey Buckeye Returns to Complete Degree

With only one quarter of classes to complete before becoming eligible for graduation, Mike McCormick, former Ohio State men’s hockey forward, was offered and jumped at the chance to play professional in Germany.

The opportunity, presented to a select few collegiate athletes, allowed McCormick to follow his career aspirations. Yet, the native of Peterborough, Ontario, still regretted not having time to finish his undergraduate degree.

That is why when McCormick walked across the stage in St. John Arena at commencement Sunday, a weight was lifted off his shoulders as he finally closed a chapter of his life.

“Coming back to Ohio State was important to me because I wanted to finish up,” McCormick said. “When I was offered a chance to play in the German league a few years ago, I only had one quarter of classes to finish. It hung over my head the whole time, knowing that I was so close – but I had to go.”

Coach Conley to appear in Chillicothe

A former OSU football assistant coach and recruiting coordinator will have an appearance in Ross County Tuesday.

Coach Bill Conley will be at the Pickaway Ross Career and Technology Center Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 895 Crouse Chapel Road. The open house begins at 5 p.m.

Conley will be promoting and selling his new double-CD audio storybook entitled, “From the Buckeye Archives,” which is a collection of 30 stories about famous Ohio State football players and coaches. A portion of proceeds from sales of Conley’s CD set and book at the event will be donated to Pickaway Ross’ holiday food drive in conjunction with the First Capital Rotary Club.

Conley served as an assistant coach at OSU for 17 years, working for head coaches Earle Bruce, John Cooper and Jim Tressel. As the Buckeyes recruiting coordinator under Cooper and Tressel, Conley gained national acclaim for consistently bringing “franchise” players to Ohio State. The list of players he recruited includes two Heisman Trophy winners in Eddie George and Troy Smith. Others include Dan “Big Daddy” Wilkinson, Orlando Pace, Terry Glenn, Andy Katzenmoyer, Chris Gamble, Nate Salley, Mike Nugent, and Ashton Youboty.
