Week 2 - Akron Zips Up Next

Well the 1-AA weekend is over. Ohio State gets the win over YSU but the Maize and Blue gets beat by Appalachian St. Moutaineers. OOPs!

The Buckeyes didn’t quite rack up 500 yards and the Penguins did gain over 150 yards but overall a pretty decent first game for the Bucks. On the positive, Brain Robiskie emerged as the go to receiver. Todd Boeckman has solidified himself as the #1 QB and he will get better with more game experience. Eight freshmen stepped up and saw action: Brandon Saine ran the ball well and Dane Sanzenbacher’s first catch was for a touchdown. The D looked good and even more importantly, very deep with speed and talent. Kicking game pretty solid even with the new kickoff distance.

On the downside, the loss of Lawrence Wilson with a broken leg is drag but we are deep on the D line; Beanie Wells never really got going; the O line was not nearly as impressive as I thought they would be. They should easily have punched the ball in on the goal line against D 1-AA size and there should have been no sacks.

Enough about YSU. How does this team continue to get better going into the game with another powerhouse in Akron?

Offensively, you have to start with the O line. Maybe they weren’t quite in sync but they need to get there and flex their muscles. The left side of the line averages 6’8” 330 lbs. and if they need 3 yards JT needs to know he can go there and get the yards. The running game and Beanie need to get going earlier in the game. It opens the game plan for the coaches and takes some early pressure off the QB. The passing game look like it is coming along minus a sack. Boechman will continue to spread the ball around a little more and we will see the other two QBs get some valuable reps against the Zips.

Defensively, the Bucks look young but deep. I like the speed all over the place but would like to see more pressure on the QB. The frosh Heyward should see more action with Wilson down and I think that will help with the line push. The DB’s need to continue to improve because they will be running into much more savvy passing attacks as the season progresses. I think we have to find a way to get Austin Spitler and Thaddeus Gibson on the field a little more. I seemed to hear their names on special teams and late in the game.

There is always a big improvement from the first to second game so I expect to see the Bucks get going early against Akron and hopefully put some solid numbers up.

GO BUCKS!

25th Anniversary of 1982 Buckeyes - Part 2

BuckeyeLegends.com is proud to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Ohio State Buckeye 1982 Football Team! We will be featuring Legends from that team through the football season.

1982 Team History

• One of Coach Earl Bruce’s top priorities entering the 1982 season was to improve his team’s defense, and particularly its ability to protect against the forward pass.
• He made three coaching changes, hiring Randy Hart and Dom Capers and promoting Fred Pagac from graduate assistant to full time assistant.
• The defense would be built around tackles Jerome Foster and Chris Riehm and inside linebacker Marcus Marek and Glen Cobb, all seniors for the 1982 season.
• On the Offense Tim Spencer and Jimmy Gayle returned at Tailback, Vaughn Broadnax at fullback, Gary Williams at wide receiver and John Frank at tight end.
• The experienced linemen included tackle William Roberts and Joe Smith, and guards Joe Lukens and Scott Zalenski.
• The hardest task was to replace Schlichter at QB. Sophomore Mike Tomczak earned the starting spot.

The 1982 Season part 2

• Bruce asked Woody Hayes to speak to the team early in the week to encourage them to remain confident about their season and it must have worked as Tomczak passed for 247 yards and was selected the Big Ten “player of the week” on the road against Illinois. Buckeyes won 26-21
• On the road at Indiana made way for Garcia Lane’s 68 yard punt return early in the fourth quarter to chalk up another win for the Buckeyes.
• With a halftime lead of 17-6 over the Boilermakers of Purdue, Coach Bruce began overflowing the field with substitutes. Nine different Buckeyes carried the ball that game, including Freshmen Keith Byars with on attempt for 5 yards.
• The 35-10 win over Minnesota gave rise to Tim Spencer have four consecutive games with more than 100 yards, and he became the second player in Ohio State history to have back to back 1,000 yard seasons. (Archie Griffin was the other).
• A win over Northwestern had the Buckeye heading into Michigan week with a 7-3 record.
• Michigan entered Ohio Stadium with a conference record of 8-0; Ohio State was 6-1. The Buckeyes scored 10 unanswered fourth quarter points to defeat the Wolverines 24-14; unfortunately, Michigan had already wrapped up the Rose Bowl bid and outright league title by playing one additional league game. This season marked the first time the loser of the annual Ohio State-Michigan game would play in Pasadena.
• The 1982 Buckeyes finished the season with a 47-17 win over Brigham young in the December 17, 1982 Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Those 47 points are the most ever to be scored by the Buckeye in a postseason game.
• For the Third straight year, OSU finished at 9-3. Marcus Marek was selected All-American, and Tom Spencer was chosen the team’s MVP. Coach Earl Bruce was 38-10 after 4 seasons, and owned a 3-1 record against Bo Schembechler and the Michigan Wolverines.
