I’d love to comment about the Ohio State - YSU game this weekend, but I didn’t get to see it. I was in Cleveland for the weekend and didn’t make plans early enough to find a restaurant that had the game. This weekend, I won’t be able to go the Ohio State - Akron game. So I’ve already made plans to watch the game at the Alumni Bar & Grill in Grove City.

I haven’t been following the drama between the Big 10 network and Time Warner. All I know is that someone needs to start thinking about the folks who can’t afford or don’t have access to Ohio State tickets. And ex-receivers who hate crowds.

While I’m on the subject of drama, I can’t let the Michigan - Appalachian State game go without comment. I can’t remember a more embarrassing loss in my lifetime. But like most people I’ve talked to since Saturday’s debacle, I have mixed feelings about the result. On the one hand, it’s nice to see Michigan get humiliated by anyone, especially a 1-AA team. But on the other hand, a loss to a lesser school–not to mention lesser division–diminishes the entire Big 10 conference. Last year’s National Championship game already suggested to some that the Big 10 was overrated and overhyped. Now this. If you listen hard enough, you can almost hear SEC and PAC 10 coaches whispering in the ears of big-time recruits who might be considering Ohio State, Michigan or Penn State.

And then there’s the inevitable Lloyd Carr debate among the Michigan faithful. I don’t pretend to care very much about the welfare of Michigan head coaches. But from my disinterested perspective, it’ll be hard to make a case for firing one of the best active coaches (statistically speaking) in the country. And he seems like one of those decent, old-school coaches I admire. Of course, given that he’s the best thing to happen to Ohio State football since gold pants, I could just be secretly, subversively wishing that he has a Joe Paterno-like tenure in Ann Arbor.

Anyway, back to Ohio State. After the mighty Penguins, MAC juggernaut Akron is up next for the Buckeyes. Let’s all hope Otterbein doesn’t have an open weekend next year.
