Ohio State Sports Mens Sports News

Baseball

•Pitcher Jake Hale has been named to the all-great Lakes Summer Collegiate League First Team.
•Ohio State teammates Ryan Dew and Zach Hurley were each chosen for the all –GLSCL second team as outfielders
•Justin Miller’s Virginia Baseball League Team, the Lury Wranglers, is currently in a best of five series against Waynesboro for VBL championship.
•Tony Kennedy hit .333 for Cincinnati in the GLSCL to rank 12th in the league in hitting
•Pitcher J.B. Shuck, playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League, was 3-2 with a 3.30 earned run average for Cotuit
•Brian DeLucia and Cory Kovanda hit .284 and .267 respectively, for Delaware of the GLSCL.
•Pitchers Eric Best and Darren Sizemore played for GLSCL teams in Licking County and Cincinnati, respectively
•Former Buckeye Christian Snavely, who plays for the Schaumberg Flyers, was the MVP of the Northern League all star game in July with a triple, home run, two runs scored and two RBI.

Basketball

•The 2007 USA Men’s U19 World Championship Team, despite being considered underdogs, traveled to Novi Sad, Serbia, in hopes of ending the USA’s gold medal drought at the U19 Worlds. While the squad, which included Ohio State’s David Lighty, didn’t achieve its goal, the American men played like a team should- proud, together, and in sync and came away with the silver medal and an 8-1 mark.
•USA Basketball in August and September will look to qualify its men for the 2008 Olympics. The FIBA Americas Championship 2007 is in Las Vegas on Aug 22-Sept 2.
•Ohio State will open the 2007-2008 men’s basketball season at 9:00pm on November 12 in the opening round of the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. Wisconsin-Green Bay will host the opening two rounds of the event at Value City Arena, which will be celebrating 10 seasons as Ohio State’s home Court.

Football

•At the opening of NFL camps in July, more than 60 Buckeyes were listed on NFL team rosters.
•Quarterback Troy Smith made his NFL debut Monday for Baltimore and helped the Ravens defeat Philadelphia 29-3.
•Two a days are underway for the football team. Players strapped on pads for the first time on Saturday the 11th and conducted drills with live contact, officially ringing in the new season.
•August 9th, the Ohio State football team held its annual media day at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes met with media to answer questions about the upcoming season and took team photos.
•August 5th, the football team reported for pre season camp

Golf

•Zach Sebert qualified for the 107th US Amateur Championship to be held August 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Incoming Freshman Bo Hoag and Junior to be Kevin Grabeman are both alternates for the event as well.
•The US Amateur Championship includes 312 players who qualify from various sites throughout the nation. The field will compete in two rounds of stroke play August 20-21, with the top 64 advancing to match play August 22-26.

Gymnastics

•Ohio State men’s gymnastics head coach, Miles Avery, announced the teams 2007-2008 schedule. The Buckeyes will host three home meets and are set to travel to Chicago, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas before ending the regular season in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the post season, Ohio State looks to add its 4th consecutive Big Ten championship title and earn entry in to the 66th NCAA championships

Hockey

•Buckeye sophomore goalie Joseph Palmer and Team White posted two victories over Team Blue in intrasquad games to open the 2007 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY. The two US squads will face off against Under-20 teams from Finland and Sweden in a series of eight international scrimmages.
•The first day of international competition at the 2007 USA hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp concluded with Team Blue defeating Finland 5-4 and Team White falling to Sweden 4-3, in a shootout.
•USA White defeated Sweden 9-2 in the first game, while USA Blue beat Finland 4-1 in the nightcap.
•Team Blue defeated Sweden 5-2 in the final game at the USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp. The USA teams finished the camp with a 7-0-0-1 combined record against Sweden and Finland.

Soccer

•The Pre Season watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy was released and Ohio State senior defender Eric Brunner was among the initial list of names considered for the award, which is given annually to the national player of the year in NCAA Division I soccer.

Swimming/Diving

•Ohio State sophomore Sam Pelkey has qualified for the 2008 US Olympic Swimming Trials. Pelkey qualified for the Olympic trials in the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke events
•The Ohio State Diving Team qualified 4 of its own for the 2008 Olympic Trials at the 2007 Kaiser Permanente Senior National Diving Championships. The 2008 Olympic Trials will take place June 18-22, 2008 at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis, IN. Former Buckeye Mitch Richeson and teammate Troy Dumais along with Ohio State Junior Wes Wieser, and incoming freshman Sean Moore will represent Ohio State and USA in the upcoming Olympic Trials.
